More from Vicki:

Even though I didn't get my drivers license until I graduated from college at age 20, I turned out to be a pretty good driver. And I really, really enjoyed driving. I especially enjoyed driving my Porsche 9142. After doing some Autocrosses and Time Trials with my local Porsche club, I decided to move up in driving competition. I joined the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) and went to their driving school in order to become a licensed race driver.  I didn't have much spare cash so I sold my Porsche and bought a used Dodge Colt that had already been set up for racing. It was two cars welded together when I bought it. It wasn't glamorous or fast but it was a way to get out on the track.

Some folks have suggested that I might be uncomfortable being the only woman on the CSD board, assuming I'm elected. The answer to that is no. Much of my life it's been me and the guys. I have two younger brothers and we played together until I went to high school. When I was with the Mac group, I hung out with the engineers a lot. I hung out with them in order to learn about what they did and how they did it. That made me muchbetter at recruiting engineers. There was only one other woman attached to the engineering group.

After my first race, I was the only woman in my racing class (Show Room Stock C). Whenever I encountered men who hadn't raced with me before, many of them did quite silly things that cost them time trying to pass me. After a while, I started winning races and the men I raced with figured out that I wasn't easy to pass. The lesson I learned from racing with the guys, is that if you are proficient you will gain their respect.

As a CSD director I will continue to foster the collaborative decision-making process, and continue to implement the civil discourse methods that I introduced to LOCAC.

Backyard Fun

My grandson and I attempt some backyard LaCross.

Racing

I refuse to believe that “girls” couldn’t successfully compete with the “men.” Both of my parents were pilots in WWII. My father flew bombers and my mother was a Women’s Air Service Pilot (WASP). PS - I won this race!
